Volvo’s Iron Horse Knight has slammed two world speed records with Goodyear truck tires
Volvo Trucks’ ‘The Iron Knight’ truck has slammed two world-class truck speeds, being equipped with Goodyear tires – the performance that makes them the fastest truck tires in the world. These special tires, developed and built by Goodyear, are the result of continued collaboration and strong partnership for Goodyear’s original equipment with Volvo Truck Trucks. Goodyear ‘The Iron Knight’ tires helped the 4.5 ton truck and 2,400 horsepower to reach an average speed of 169.09 km / h (105 mph) in a time of 21.29 seconds, in a a thousand yards from the start. The Iron Knight also downgraded the record to a distance of 500 meters at a speed of 131.29 km / h (81.6 mph) in 13.71 seconds from the start. If these results are not impressive enough, the Iron Knight truck has reached a maximum speed of 276 km / h (171.5 mph) during the setting of the two records.
The technology for these Goodyear’s unique truck tires for the new speed record is based on the experience gained in truck racing. The carcasses used for the tires to break these records are Goodyear’s latest standard carcasses, such as those used every day on European roads. The new Goodyear tire speed recordings demonstrate Goodyear’s dominance in technology in the road transport industry.
“With so much power and engine torque, ensuring that a 4.5 ton truck stays stuck at the track at a speed of nearly 280 km / h is a real challenge for tires,” said Laurent Colantonio, Director of Goodyear Truck Tire Technology Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “The ability to develop tires that break down speed records proves our great ability to use innovation and advanced technology to produce exceptional tires. This is true in the case of tires developed for the Iron Knight truck as well as our standard tires that deliver the highest levels of performance to our customers and help them reduce total cost of ownership. ”
The Goodyear The Iron Knight 315 / 70R22.5 steering axle is based on Goodyear Truck Racing tires, which are used by all trucks competing in the European Truck Racing European Truck Racing Championship (FIA). Tires 495 / 45R22.5 for the traction axle are able to withstand an incredible torque like that developed by the Iron Knight truck. Both tires are built on Goodyear standard truck tires, which have a specially developed tread compound and a treadmill profile. World Record Tires, Goodyear The Iron Knight, have special insignia on the side wall.
The race for setting these new records took place on a closed test track in northern Sweden. The Iron Knight truck was driven by Boije Ovebrink, who has over 30 years of experience in both racing and racing, and has previously topped five other world records. At the moment, the two records are reviewed by the FIA, the international motor sport association.
Volvo Trucks and Goodyear have a long and strong partnership history – especially when it comes to world records. Mean Green, also piloted by Boije Ovebrink, has become the fastest hybrid truck in the world in 2012 when the speed record on the truck tires specially developed by Goodyear has also been dropped.
